Obscure Japanese Sports Car of the Week: Kuruma (Inter Proto Series)

The Kuruma (this is a Japanese word which means “car,” “automobile”, or “vehicle”) is a car that was designed for a new one-make racing series called the “Inter Proto Series” which was held in Fuji International Speedway, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan , from June 22 ? 23, 2013. Unlike Super GT cars, this doesn’t have large wings and spoilers. What it does have is a mid-mounted 3,950 cc V6 engine which generates 340 hp (335 bhp) at 6,400 rpm, a weight of 1,000 ? 1,100 kg., and rear wheel drive.
The series is run by a certain Mr. Masanori Sekiya, who is apparently, a leading figure in the Japanese motorsport industry and who had something to do with Japan’s first (and so-far, only) victory in the 24 Hours Le Mans race in the Mazda 787B.
The Kuruma is built around a carbon fibre tub, but with a full rollcage for rigidity and protection. This is a fast car, especially with racing slick tires, and is somewhat on the small size, with a length of 4.4 meters, similar to a Porsche 997. It has a power-to-weight ratio of 305-335 bhp/ton, which is similar to the 2012 Nissan GT-R. A lack of big wings enables it to have a high top speed.
Despite supercar looks and room for 2, this is a purpose-built race car, meaning, it was built exclusively as a race car, not for street driving. It has a FIA-approved fuel tank, on-board fire extinguisher and built in air jacks to prop it up in the pits for a tire change. It has a Ricardo 6-speed racing sequential gearbox, but also has paddles attached to the steering wheel for gear shifting. The sequential box has a clutch pedal, but it is only used to start and stop in first gear. The steering wheel has 7 buttons, with a green button for putting the gears to “neutral.” After going to neutral, you can then engage reverse. This is to prevent accidentally going to reverse while the gears are engaged in a forward moving gear.
These are the main features of this car. For more information, you may check out their website, which is as follows:
